Love the moment, love the dance, for life is but a moment and the dance a lifetime.  John Larabee

When Food is Special

photographic image of The Ohio State Fair at dusk just inside the 11th avenue gate

Summer would not be the same without the Ohio State Fair. After all, where else can you eat your way from one end of the fair to the other on such delicacies as deep-fried chocolate-covered bacon? I can easily pass on the bacon, as well as funnel cakes, elephant ears, and fair fries, but in […]

Corn Chowder

This classic corn chowder is a summer favorite. This recipe is loaded with vegetables, sweet, and completely plant-based.

Salsa

Either breakfast was late, or lunch was early. I couldn’t find Frank, and catastrophe was certain without him.

“Frank,” I called, “Where are you, sweetheart?”

Frank did not answer.

I searched the kitchen. That is where I usually find him. “I need you, Frank,” I pleaded. “Where are you hiding?” It was just like Frank to hide. He was always such a tease and a spicy sort, at that. I love Frank, and he knows it.

Perfect Iced Tea

Some people are known for their great talents. The world is full of actors, singers, writers, and other creative types. Others have great minds and pursue prestigious careers in science. As for me – I am the creative type. As a nurse, I gravitated to areas where I could use my passion for teaching and coaching, places where I could make abundant use of my rather warped sense of humor, writing, and speaking skills. Yet, if you ask my family what they “inherited” from me, they would all say “iced tea.”

Pause

On Monday morning, I visited our backyard garden to pick several cherry tomatoes and a handful of blackberries from the vine. Holding these tiny nutritional gems in the palm of my hand warmed me, knowing that my husband John had nurtured each one for months. From soil to plate, the garden lifecycle for this small harvest was now complete. Today, John will tend to the remaining garden, and I will toss the tomatoes and blackberries into a larger breakfast salad to nourish us. Food is as much about the spirit as it is about nutrition.
